Pain in the heel of the foot is unfortunately quite a common condition, and although not serious in itself, can be crippling in its effect. Pain in the foot can occur in the arch or the sole, as well as in the heel, and can often seem worse first thing in the morning when getting up, and may then decrease as you start to move about. The good news is that most cases respond well to treatment although recovery can take a little while.
Pain under the foot is often due either to a problem related to the structure of the foot or to a small spur of bone present.Sometimes damage, even slight but repeated damage over many years, can gradually cause tearing in the plantar fascia leading to thickening and/or inflammation. Such damage can occur in those who regularly go jogging or running on hard, flat surfaces, such as city pavements. Other possible causes are a hairline fracture of a bone in the foot, (of which there are many in the foot), or arthritis, or inflammation of the tendons.
Wearing inappropriate shoes can put a strain on the plantar fascia, which is the band of strong tissue running from the heel to toes in the foot. Strain can cause irritation, inflammation and consequent pain. Spending long hours on your feet, being flat-footed, or obese, are also possible contributary factors in causing pain in the heels.
